What is an SKP file?
An SKP file is a three-dimensional model created by SketchUp software, an easy-to-use 3D design program. It contains a model which includes wireframes, shades, edge effects, and textures. SKP files may also store components that can be inserted into your document.
The SKP file is the main file type used by SketchUp that allows conceptual designs to be created, viewed, and shared quickly and easily. When you create a new document and save it in SketchUp the SKP file is created to store the document and its contents. SKP files can also be used to store SketchUp components, which are objects, such as a door or window, that you can reuse to save time. Components may be made by you or another user and can be imported into an SKP document to be inserted into your model.

SketchUp also allows you to save your document for archiving purposes. If you want to backup your SKP document you can save it as an .SKB backup file.
SketchUp was originally developed by @Last Software, but was bought by Google in 2006. SketchUp 5 was the last version released by @Last. Version 6 was developed by Google but it is now owned by Trimble. SketchUp models created with SketchUp can be placed within Google Earth or shared using the 3D Warehouse feature.
